The inspiration for Ancient Ones came from the YouTube channel Desert Drifter. Its creator, Andrew Cross, regularly ventured into remote canyons of the American Southwest, searching for traces of the ancient civilizations that lived there many centuries ago.

Andrew’s videos are extraordinary—beautifully photographed, quietly compelling, and filled with genuine curiosity. He always asked the same essential questions: Why here? How did they live? Why did they leave?

These short stories are an exploration of those questions, giving shape to the lives that might have filled those cliff dwellings and hidden alcoves.

Tragically, Andrew passed away in March 2025. His channel remains a remarkable archive, and I highly recommend exploring it—whether to learn about these landscapes or simply to be transported by his eye for beauty and story: Desert Drifter on YouTube
